Guided reading is a powerful and efficient way to differentiate and meet the specific needs of your children while you meet with them in small groups. it gives children a chance to problem solve with new texts in a safe environment and it gives you a chance to build rapport as you work side by side with the children. During guided reading, students in a small group setting individually read a text that you have selected at their instructional reading level. you provide teaching across the lesson to support students in building the in the head networks of strategic actions for processing increasingly challenging texts. Guided reading gives teachers the opportunity to observe students as they read from texts at their instructional reading levels. this strategy guide describes ideas that support guided reading, including practical suggestions for implementing it in the classroom; introduces guided reading; and includes a reading list for further investigation. Modelled reading (reading to or reading aloud) involves students listening to a text read aloud by the teacher. the teacher models skilled reading behaviour, enjoyment and interest in a range of different styles of writing and types of text. In guided reading, the goal is to build independent readers who can read fluently with comprehension. a guided reading teacher plays the role of an expert reader who scaffolds—and, yes, guides —the lesson for less experienced readers. therefore, a guided reading teacher plans lessons and focuses instruction on the areas where students need.

Shared reading is an interactive reading experience that occurs when students join in or share the reading of a book or other text while guided and supported by a teacher. the teacher explicitly models the skills of proficient readers, including reading with fluency and expression.
